Clark's Journal, August 1787, heavily edited
Sunday the 12th
Dressed and went on board the Lady Penryn to prayers. Goemer Johnson and William Collins would not let me return, but detained me to dinner with Major Ross, Mr. Johnson the clergyman and his wife. Mr. Johnson baptized one of the convict children... Returned on board with Mr. & Mrs. Johnson where he read prayers, and after the service baptized the marine's child that was born at sea, who was named Thomas Russell.
Mr. & Mrs. Johnson stayed for tea with us... Everybody on board seemed to behave themselves very well while Service was performed, which I am very happy about. The text on board the Lady Penryn was taken from the 107th Psalm, beginning at the 23rd verse "They that go down to the Sea in Ships and occupy their business in great Waters." His sermon on board was useful.
